Press Room - Newsletters - 1997 Summer

Greetings

This is only our second edition of SchuyWritings, but far from our last. We hope for many more editions in the future, as Schuyler House continues to grow; it's our way of staying in touch with our customers. We've gotten generally good responses from our first edition (and many thanks to those of you who took the time to return our customer survey!).

Future editions of SchuyWritings will offer advice, humor, and even a bit of history. Right now, though, we're just starting this publication, so I'll talk about something lighthearted but dear to us: how to pronounce our name.

Our company's name is Schuyler House. Our product is called SchuyLab. (This publication is called SchuyWritings. You may notice a pattern here.) In every case, the letters "Schuy-" are pronounced like "sky" - as in, the big blue sky, sky-high, the sky's the limit. Sky-ler House. Sky-Lab. Sky-Writings.

Why'd we choose the name? Our Founder, Bill Shipley, is of Dutch ancestry. His great-great-grandmother's maiden name was Schuyler, and he liked the sound of it. It's a Dutch word meaning "scholar", so it seemed appropriate for a company run by medical and engineering professionals. And the potential for word play was just to good to pass up.

Tech Tips

Q: Why doesn't remote printing work?

A: In order for Remote Printing to work the receiving printer must be loaded with paper, on-line, and plugged into a dedicated phone line. If your document is not printed on the remote site, one of the above conditions may not be met or there may be a paper jam. Call the remote site and have the printer checked. Once the printer is ready, it is necessary to go to F7/Features > Remote Print > (select the remote site) > (remove the check from 'Suspend Transmission' > (OK) > (Done) > F10 > F10 > (Quit). Type 'Online'. This must be done at the station to which the printer is attached.

Q: While printing a job my printer ran out of paper. I replaced the paper, why won't it print?

A: If printing is interrupted for any reason (out of paper, paper jam, etc.) you need to remove the check from the 'Suspend Further Print' checkbox. Go to F8/Tools > Printer Setup > (remove check form 'Suspend Further Print') > (OK) > F10 > F10 > (Quit). Type 'Online'. This must be done at the station to which the printer is attached.

Q: Why can't I FAX or Remote Print?

A: For successful Fazing or Remote Printing the station with the modem must be turned on and running SchuyLab.

Q: What else should I know about Remote Print and Remote Fax set-up?

A: When dialing outside your own area code you need to dial '1' first. The auto-faxing module automatically prefixes a '1' first. The auto-faxing module automatically prefixes a '1' before a ten digit phone number (area cod + seven digits) so you don't have to enter a '1" as part of the Auto-Fax setup. You do have to enter '1' as part of the Remote Print setup. Also, some phone systems require you to dial '9' to get an outside line. If you are on that type of system, enter the prefix '9' through Dialing Access/Prefix (F8/Tools > Setup > Station Setup > Setup Comm > Comm 4 / Modem > Setup). Do not set the prefix in the Auto Fax setup, even though it asks for it.

Leasing 101

"If it appreciates in value, buy it.
If it depreciates, lease it."
J. Paul Getty

Small business advisors say equipment leasing often makes good sense. Why?

  • Leasing offers companies the ability to use equipment on highly flexible terms. Arrangements can be adjusted to the user's unique business conditions, cash flow, equipment needs, and tax situations.

  • Leasing facilitates cash flow management by keeping lines of credit open and avoiding costly down payments.

  • Leasing provides a way to avoid the risk of obsolescence through the return or upgrade of equipment at the end of the lease term.

  • Leasing can be very price competitive in comparison with other forms of financing.

  • Leasing can reduce taxes because leasing costs come out of before-tax dollars, not after-tac profits. (Note: not all leases are tax deductible.)

  • Leasing allows the lessee to pay for equipment as they use it today, using tomorrow's dollars to generate income for their business.

  • Lease payments will not change. Variable bank rates frequently do.

  • Leasing allows a business to use their valuable capital as an investment in other aspects of their operation.

  • In lease arrangements the term can be as long as 60 months. Many banks only lend money short term, usually for 12 to 36 months.

  • Leasing programs and procedures are specially designed to take the red tape out of financing capital equipment for business.
