Tech Tips

Adding or Deleting Software

Recently several of our customers have attempted to add software to their SchuyLab computer, causing system operation problems. Other customers have deleted files they believed were unneeded and disabled the system entirely. SchuyLab is a dedicated system and the addition of additional software may degrade system operation or cause significant malfunctions (possibly with loss of data).

Please do not add or delete any software from your SchuyLab system, this can lead to system errors the resolution of which may result in billable charges. If you feel it is necessary to add software to your SchuyLab system please call our technical support line so that we can help you determine if and how this can be best accomplished.

Win95 and Screen/Power Savers

SchuyLab Tech Support has identified a problem with SchuyLab computers running Windows 95 screen savers or power saver routines. When a computer using one of these is left idle it may cause the computer to "lock up" and stop working when the screen saver or power save mode activates.

To disable these functions in Win95, right-click on the desk top and select properties. Choose 'Screen Saver' from the tabs at the top, then go to the box marked 'Screen Saver' and select '(None)'. Be sure that the boxes marked 'Low Power Standby' and 'Shut Off Monitor' do not have a check mark in them.

If you're running SchuyLab on a Win 95 system, please take a minute to check your settings so that you can avoid this problem.

After Hours Service

Schuyler House technical support is available 24 hours a day at no extra charge. Our normal business hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday.

After normal business hours, technical support is restricted to problems that prevent you performing or receiving tests.

Please save any calls regarding setting up new tests, ordering labels, billing problems, requests for training, or other non-critical issues for the following morning. At Schuyler House we are committed to supporting all SchuyLab users. We look forward to helping you.

Data Base Clean-Up

As SchuyLab is used to perform work in the laboratory, it creates files and indexes for greater efficiency in handling information. These files and indexes may be considered as 'scratch paper' which the system uses for a while. Additionally, worksheets will be created by the tech's, the information on them accepted into the patient's records, and the (now redundant) worksheet left in memory. Eventually, this electronic clutter can impede the functioning of SchuyLab, causing the system to run slowly or even causing it to stop.

The Clean Up Data Base function removes the unneeded files and compresses the patient report files into a more compact format. There will be no patient information list by this process. Clean up will not discard any document until (1) all the results on it have been accepted, (2) a hard copy of that result has printed out on a data log function (if your lab selects that option), (3) the tests have been billed (if the Billing Module is in use).

A full description of the Clean Up Data Base process can be found in your SchuyLab Manual in Section VII: Maintenance. Before using Cleanup Database, check to be sure that the Cleanup Parameters are set the way you want them. This is described in Section VI: Management, under the heading of Parameter ID Definition.

Labels

SchuyLab can print specimen labels on standard printers. The program must be configured to the specific label format. To do this, go to F6/Print > Print Labels > Setup. Select 'Custom Design' under Format and enter the required specifications for the type and size of labels that you use. Please be sure to select the correct labels for your type of printer.
